Trust awards £150,000 for indoor climbing wall at adventure centre

Climbing wall at Adventure DolphinGreenham Trust awarded a grant of £150,000 to fund an indoor climbing wall at the newly refurbished Adventure Dolphin Centre in Pangbourne.

The old Dolphin Centre had reached the end of its useful life and was demolished in May 2009 to make way for the new centre. The new prestigious building which was opened by HRH Prince Edward in 2010, has received plaudits from users as well as the wider community for its creative design incorporating an indoor climbing wall, fully accessible facilities and first floor community room with panoramic views over the Thames.

The completion of the rebuilding marks the end of successful partnership working to fund the project. West Berkshire District Council’s Capital programme supported the overall rebuilding, along with substantial support from the Adventure Dolphin Charity and Greenham Trust.

The services manager of Youth Services at West Berkshire Council Mark Vernon said: “The inclusion of the climbing wall will significantly enhance the facilities within the centre enabling additional activities to be accessed by users. With the only other climbing wall in West Berkshire currently in Newbury, this will add a much needed resource to facilities in the East of the district.”

Managed by West Berkshire Council Youth Services, the Activity team based at the Dolphin Centre are able to deliver a comprehensive programme of water and land based activities for young people in the local community, as well as customised programmes for school students. “Whether it is for young people who have never been in a canoe before, or leading a group of teenagers on an outdoor adventure programme in Europe, the Activity team can develop a programme customised for participants,” added Mark.

To ensure the highest safety standards are maintained, the centre is registered with the Adventurous Activities Licensing Authority, as well as holding the highly regarded Club Mark Award. All coaches are qualified by relevant National Governing bodies such as the British Canoe Union.
