New Home for Mencap Link Up and Newbury Community Furniture Project

Units D, E and F, Hambridge LaneIn 2013 the Trust acquired a 40,000 plus sq. ft. building, off Hambridge Road in Newbury, for West Berkshire Mencap's Link Up project and for the Newbury Community Resource Centre's Furniture Project, double the size of their previous home - the former Slater Centre at Greenham Business Park. The Trust will continue to provide grants to cover the rent for the new accommodation so the two organisations can occupy it for free.

The charities required new premises following a steady expansion in training and employment schemes for disadvantaged people, many with physical and learning disabilities, giving both their organisations the opportunity for growth and development.

The Furniture ProjectUnit F

The Newbury Community Resource Centre

The Furniture Project is well-established in Newbury, providing re-used furniture, electrical goods and household items at affordable prices, with a lower price band for those in receipt of benefits.

The Training and Community Support Centre, which used to be based at the Slater Centre on the Greenham Business Park, provides volunteering, supported volunteering and training opportunities for vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the local area. Participants can chose from a wide range of activities, including IT and office skills, re-upholstery, woodwork, electrical repair and forklift truck driving. The addition of a bicycle repair workshop has proved very popular with trainees and customers.

Training and Community Support CentreChief Executive of the NCRC, Kelvin Hughes, commented “It’s great to have so much more space now in Unit F, which has allowed us to bring together our shop and our training workshops into one location and increase the synergies between the two parts of the charity. Our disadvantaged volunteers can now gain experience in retail and customer service, as well as the more practical activities going on in the workshops.”
